FAMILY-RUN GARAGE DOOR REPAIR ยท OVERLAND PARK, KANSAS
Garage door trouble in Overland Park? Same-day help, most days.
Your door is stuck, sagging, or making a noise it has never made before. Metcalf Garage Door is a family-run repair crew based in south Overland Park, and Johnson County is the whole map: the postwar ranches up by Shawnee Mission, the wide three-car doors out past 151st, and everything along Metcalf in between. Start with a free, no-obligation estimate. We will tell you plainly what failed, what it costs to fix, and why the part gave up.

A broken door, handled by people you can call back
A garage door that will not open is rarely just a garage door problem. A car is trapped, a workday is bending around it, and the biggest door in the house is suddenly a wall. Metcalf Garage Door exists for that morning. Call and you reach Carla, who runs the schedule from our office in Stanley, the old neighborhood around 151st and Metcalf. Describe what the door is doing, and the diagnosis starts on the phone: a door that rose crooked is telling a different story than one that groans and stops.
Most calls in Overland Park and Johnson County are seen the same day, because the trucks never leave the county and the river towns just north. When the technician gets there, you hear the diagnosis and the full price before any repair starts, and the diagnosis names exactly what you are paying to replace. That habit is the company. A repair you understand is a repair you do not have to take on faith.
New here? Start with the estimate. It costs nothing and commits you to nothing. If your car is trapped in the garage right now, call, and tell Carla that first. A trapped car moves to the front of the day.
The family behind the name
Metcalf Avenue is the street this county counts from, and the name fits how we work: one road, one county, known well. Paul Mercer spent eleven years installing doors for one of the region's big door companies, house after house in the subdivisions of south Overland Park, Lenexa, and Olathe, and then years of warranty callbacks on doors that had been installed in a hurry. In 2021 he and his wife Carla started Metcalf Garage Door out of their own garage near 159th and Metcalf. Marcus Bell, who apprenticed under Paul at the old shop, runs the second truck. Three people, two trucks, no call center. The full story is on the about page.

Johnson County is the whole map
Some companies cover the whole metro and send a stranger from wherever the schedule has a hole. Ours stops at the county line and the Kansas River, on purpose. Overland Park is the hub: downtown along Santa Fe Drive, the Corporate Woods and College Boulevard office core, the neighborhoods out by Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead and the Museum at Prairiefire, and the Blue Valley subdivisions running south to 179th. Around it sit the small northeast cities, Fairway, Mission Hills, Roeland Park, Westwood, each a few square miles of older homes, and the growth edges at Gardner, Spring Hill, Stilwell, and De Soto. Short map, short drives, and a crew that knows which decades of housing stock carry which doors. The full list is on the service areas page.
Garage doors in Overland Park homes
Overland Park is really two housing stocks sharing one city. North of about 87th Street, and in the little cities tucked along the county's northeast corner, the homes are postwar: ranches and Cape Cods with single-car garages, detached garages behind the house, and doors that have been opening since the sixties and seventies. Down the Metcalf corridor and south of 135th Street, the city turns into the growth decades: wider lots, two and three-car garages, tall doors built for trucks and SUVs, and builder-installed springs now reaching the age where a whole street's doors start failing in the same few years.
That split decides what breaks. The older doors fail slowly: cables fray, rollers wear oval, wood sections swell and stick in humid months. The newer wide doors fail under their own weight when a spring sized a little light finally lets go. Either way, the fix starts the same: tell us your neighborhood and roughly when the house was built, and we will already have a fair idea of what is hanging over your driveway.
Why homeowners call Metcalf
The failed part tells the story
Every repair here starts with the part that came off your door and what it says. A snapped spring tells one story. A gear worn smooth tells another. A price is much easier to judge when the diagnosis starts from the failure itself, and any company should be able to name what failed and why. Hold every repair to that standard, ours included.
One family answers the phone
There is no dispatch board and no out-of-state call center. Carla schedules every job herself, and the voice that books you is the voice that calls back when the truck is on its way. If you call next month with a question about the work, you will get one of the three of us, and we will remember the door.
One county, on purpose
We turned down the whole-metro map. Johnson County and the Wyandotte river towns are plenty, and working one county means the trucks are close, the housing stock is familiar, and a morning call in Mission and an afternoon call in Stilwell can both be kept without heroics.
The estimate starts free
Every job starts with a free, hassle-free, no-obligation estimate. You hear what failed and what the repair costs, in plain words, before you decide anything. Sleep on it if you want to. The estimate is the start of the conversation, not a hook in it.
What happens when you call
- You talk to Carla. Call Call for same-day help or send the estimate form. No phone tree, no ticket number. Tell her what the door is doing.
- You describe, we narrow it down. Crooked, loud, stuck, dead remote: each symptom points somewhere. If a car is trapped, say so first.
- You hear the price before the tools come out. The diagnosis and the full price are explained at your door before any repair begins. The estimate is free and no-obligation, and no is a complete answer.
- You get your garage back. The door gets tested through full cycles before we leave, and the failed part stays named in the diagnosis. Questions later reach the same three people.
Questions we hear at the kitchen table
Is it safe to lift the door by hand with a broken spring?
Usually not worth trying. The springs do the lifting, and without them a double door can weigh as much as a small piano. If the car has to come out, call and tell us a spring is broken and the car is trapped; that call goes to the front of the day. More on the FAQ page.
Why did my door get so loud all of a sudden?
A door that was fine last month and clatters now is asking for attention. Worn rollers are the loudmouths of the system, and a cable starting to fray can slap and pop as it winds. New noise is information. It is cheapest to listen to it early. More on the FAQ page.
How long does a repair usually take?
Most single repairs, a spring set, a cable, an opener gear, run about an hour once the truck is at your house. Older doors and custom sizes can take longer. When you book, Carla will give you a realistic window for your job, not a best case. More on the FAQ page.
The keypad works, but my remotes quit. What is going on?
When the wall button and keypad still run the door, the opener itself is fine, and the problem sits in the radio side: batteries first, then the remotes, then the receiver. It is one of the most fixable calls we get. More on the FAQ page.
What does a spring replacement run around Overland Park?
Springs are the most common repair in Johnson County. Replacing the pair on a standard double door typically runs $275 to $500 installed around here. The full local table is on the repair page, and your own number comes with the free estimate.
